Your child's birthday is coming up and, of course, they want a birthday party. If you can't stomach the idea of inviting a number of little munchkins into your house, and the thought of indoor play centres makes you want to run away screaming, then here are some alternatives.

1. Pottery Playroom
This place is great for birthdays. It's small so you aren't overwhelmed by noise the minute you walk in. They provide everything you need and there is a small play area for those children that finish painting or are bored easily. You can bring your own party food or discuss catering with the owners.

There are two options for creating masterpieces. You can paint and have them fired in the kiln which means they're ready for collection a week later ($22 per child). If you don't want to wait you can choose alternative acrylic paints which allow you to take you pieces home on the day ($15 per child).

2. AMF Bowling
Fun for all ages, bowling never gets old. Having a birthday party at an AMF bowling centre takes out all of the hassle and worry about mess, food, etc. All you have to do is provide the cake. You get assigned a party host who looks after everything for you. The children are assigned to lanes in small groups which means they don't have to wait too long between turns. Once their games are finished they get taken into the party room where they eat their pre-ordered lunch and have the cake. At AMF Joondalup, the party for one game of bowling costs just under $20 each and includes the game, arcade tokens, lunch, invitations, party bags and a party host.

3. Joondalup Climbing Centre
We went here for a six year old's birthday party. I wouldn't recommend it for younger than that but the kids had a great time. Many of the walls were too hard for them to climb, but most of them managed to do a good job on the easier walls. There is an upstairs mezzanine with tables where you can serve your own party food. Prices are $20 per child or $18 per child if you have more than ten.

4. The Fairies Joondalup
This one has a slightly smaller appeal - great if you have a little girl but not really ideal if you have older children or boys. If you're in the market for a little girl's party though, this is a great option. All little girls love dressing up even if they're not familiar with The Fairies. Again, this venue takes the hassle out of the party for the birthday child's parents. You get a fairy host who organises everything from the games to the food to the dancing. All you have to do is bring the cake and your camera.
