I'm an inner-city rambler who's happy to share my best finds with you. My writing turns up in the local street press, magazines, and more. (This week's pic: flamingo stencil, Rialto shops, Hardgrave Road.)
Event: 10/03/2012 - 18/03/2012

Lycra lovers, Sunday cyclists, fixie fanatics and all who love the deadly treadly: prepare your pedals for this year's Bike Week, coming to a spot near you from the 10th to the 18th of March.

A Bicycle Queensland initiative that gets bigger and better every year, Bike Week is an opportunity for everyone from cycling fanatics to raw novices to get on their bikes. More than twenty fun, healthy and (mostly) free events are on offer, so pretty much everybody should be able to find something that appeals.

Highlights will include the Babies on Bikes Teddy Bear Picnic on Sunday 11th March, a Lazy Sunday Cycle on the same day (see my previous article on the Lazy Sunday concept for more info), and a bicycle tour of Brisbane's monuments on Saturday the 17th.

There's even an evening of 10-speed dating for those single cyclists looking for love. Just bring your bike and helmet, go for a leisurely ride, then finish up at a West End cafe where you can chat and perhaps meet the rider of your dreams.

Old favourites like Ride to Work Day and the Mt Coot-tha Challenge will return, plus there are road-racing events for those who love the skinny wheels. You can get a free session at an indoor riding centre, or learn about bike maintenance and more at a women's riding seminar.

Personally, I'm looking forward to heading off to the Bike Orienteering day at Wavell Heights. I've tried bike orienteering for the past two years courtesy of Bike Week, and it's great fun.

My sense of direction is appalling, my map-reading skills non-existent (there's a reason I live in the inner-city), but it's a hoot pedalling around the checkpoints, clipping your card and trying to find your way back to the start. Last year, my group took so long to finish that the organisers' stall had pretty much packed up by the time we trundled in, but, what the hey, we all had a fine old time.

Visit the Bike Week program for all the details and to make a booking. These events are always super-popular (and some may require training to do your lycra justice), so check it out soon and get yourself organised.
