Where's the Best Vista of Adelaide's Coastline

If you are anything like me, you find heading to the beach (particularly in the warmer months) one of the most relaxing ways to unwind. Whether it be on a balmy Summer's eve, or a promising Spring weekend, nothing is better than spending time with good company (sometimes yourself is enough), lazing through a few bites to eat and something to drink, while absorbing the sparkling views of the Gulf of St Vincent.

And nothing irks me more than finding this happy place interrupted by the following facts of life at the suburban beach: the cacophony of car noise – horns blaring, beats blasting and burn outs offending, cyclists and joggers blocking the views, and enough prams around to refute the fact that Adelaide's population is ageing.

In order to avoid these attacks on my senses, I have found a few fabulous spots along the coast that I frequent to ensure pure bliss.

In no particular preferential order, but simply from South to North:

The Star of Greece

With a prime position atop the cliffs at Pt Willunga, the Star of Greece is a delightful café with breathtaking views aplenty for you to daydream the weekend away. The staff inside are friendly, helpful and attentive and the casual ambiance makes it easy to while away the hours.

I recently celebrated my birthday here with a few friends and had a long lunch savouring great food from local produce (gluten-free friendly), great wines (they are also accommodating of BYO), and a gorgeous, sunny day to maximise the views down the Gulf of St Vincent.

You need to book ahead to ensure a table inside the café, however, the outdoor take-away has the best fish and chips in the area and the views even better. Trust me, 'The Star' will steal your heart.

Broadway Kiosk

Decidedly more brisk brunch than lazy lunch, the Broadway Kiosk is known and frequented more for its location than its outstanding service or even excellent coffee. Taking a short stroll from Glenelg down to the Kiosk ensures you are away from the overbearing crowds of Jetty Road and can enjoy a coffee, sandwich, or some hot junk with your pup in tow. Better enjoyed during the week, otherwise you'll be fighting through the Lycra to get your macchiato while it's still hot!

West Beach Surf Club

Practically hovering over the water is the W.B.S.C. A favourite for locals, the news began to escape last summer of the amazing sunsets and great atmosphere on the balconies. Come in the evenings for a glass of wine, and watch the tantalising views, especially on training nights.

Joe's Kiosk

Recently in the media for an outstanding display of public art, Joe's Kiosk has long been a local haunt of mine to lose myself beyond the horizons and relax. Although the setting is humble, location is the best, a brick building with white plastic tables outside that are a step away from the soft white sand of Henley Beach. It's the closest place I have seen to the far away beach cafes of Salvador (Brazil) or Rimini (Italy), where you are, of course, on the beach (why haven't we done that yet?). Drop in, meet Joe, order a coffee and wait for the dolphins to interrupt your thoughts as they meander past.

Grange Hotel

The iconic Grange Hotel is the last on the list along the coast. Thanks to careful council planning, the area has been upgraded without losing its special connection to the environment it inhabits. It's pleasurable to sit outside the Grange Hotel and enjoy the peace of the ocean and the vista of the Jetty and the dunes. The food is fantastic, the wine list extensive and staff friendly. It has not been voted Best Bistro in Australia for nothing.

Sadly, that is my list exhausted. These cherished establishments are truly special in that they have not had their excellence interrupted by man-made atrocities, such as roads, toilet blocks, function rooms in sanddunes, car parks, and windows that don't open.

So, come and relax by the beach, while you still can. Are there any other great vistas of the coastline you can think of?
