Hawthorne is one of those suburbs that it is easy to overlook. It's one of Brisbane's grand, old suburbs, which retains its genteel, leafy avenues, where children still play in the streets with their neighbours. Yet despite its old school perception, Hawthorne is a happening suburb with lots going on if you know where to look.

First of my Hawthorne highlights would be the gorgeous little boutique " Coming Up Roses " on Riding Rd, owned and run by Hayley Lewis, the swimmer and TV personality, who is often found behind the counter. This is a delightful place to pick up a present for someone you love and has lots of cute things for children too. Every nook and cranny is packed with beautiful, quaint and stylish things and the English, vintage style of the shop hugely appeals to me as a pom!

Another of my favourite haunts is "Hawthorne Garage" on Hawthorne Road. This fabulous place meets many of the locals' needs as a place to meet, grab a coffee, light lunch, shopping essentials and delights. I particularly love the deli counter where I can grab a freshly roasted chicken for a lazy Sunday dinner or picnic treats before heading off down the coast for the weekend.

Just along from Hawthorne Garage is "Ooniverse Cafe". A unique, child friendly venue where children can e themselves and parents don't have to worry about the mess they are making or havoc caused. Children can do hand prints on the walls, draw on the paper covered tables, help themselves to the books and toys provided and parents can buy healthy snacks and decent coffee for themselves. Regular "fun" sessions are run and provide great entertainment for children.

Next stop would be "Hawthorne Pantry" just up Riding Road for more great shopping, fresh flowers and coffee too. Perfect for a take away to enjoy whilst the kids run riot in the fabulous Hawthorne Park.
" Hawthorne Park " has play things to suit children of all ages from a sandpit for babies, monkey bars and climbing frames to the super, slippery slide that challenges toddlers, puts grey hairs on mother's heads and extols whoops of delight from bigger kids. The park is well used by the community and used to be a cycling velodrome and is still a wonderful track for cycling, running or walking the dog. On the second Sunday of the month you can even find a local market, Love Your Local Markets Hawthorne, at the Morningside Panthers Football Club at the heart of the park.

" Love Your Local Markets Hawthorne " brings the best of what is on offer locally to Hawthorne on the second Sunday of every month between 7am -1pm. This is a boutique, lifestyle market, designed with families in mind. It offers fun activities for children, including face painting, bouncy castles and pony rides as well as sporting activities for older children.

There is an array of the finest fresh and seasonal produce stalls, organic speciality items, hot food stalls and stunning lifestyle stalls. With live music, a choice of the most delicious coffee and freshly baked goods, there really is something for the whole family. Market dates until the end of the year are 14 July, 11 Aug, 8 Sep, 13 Oct, 10 Nov and 8 Dec 2013.

These are a few of my Hawthorne highlights and what makes Hawthorne fabulous to me!
