Best (Mostly) Free Activities on Mother's Day 2017

You really don't need a reason to spoil your mum; you can spoil here any day of the year, however Mother's Day is just that extra special day of the year, when mum will happily lap up any spoiling you want to give her, without questioning what you are up to!

In my family, just spending time together is the critical component, so here is my pick for the best free activities to indulge your mum this mother's day.

Adelaide History Festival

If your mum, like me, just loves everything to do with history, there are heaps of free events to enjoy at the Adelaide History Festival on from 1 – 31 May 2017.

A Day at the Seaside is an Exhibition of historical photographs from the collection of the Henley and Grange Historical Society which is being shown at the Grange Institute Library, 4 Beach Street, Grange every Sunday in May from 10 am to 3 pm.

For further information contact Linda Sambell on 8353 0883 or email [email protected].

For something closer to town, why not take a journey to trace the history of St John's Anglican Church and its unique place in South Australian history. You will be able to view the Burne-Jones designed window and various memorials and guides will be available to answer any questions.

The Church, located at 379 Halifax Street, Adelaide will be open Sunday 7 and 14 May 2017, from 11 am to 2 pm.

For further information, contact Caroline Adams on 0437 620 311 or email [email protected].

Botanic Gardens

If mum really likes getting back to nature, why not take her for a free guided tour of the Adelaide, Mount Lofty or Wittuna Botanic Gardens.

The gardens are a fantastic location for a walk with nature and mum with free guided walks available. Adelaide Botanic Gardens offer free guided walks at 10.30 am from the Visitor Information Centre at the Schomburgk Pavilion. Mount Lofty walks are available on Thursdays at 10.30 am from the Lower Car Park (entry via Lampert Road) and Wittunga on Tuesdays at 10.30 am from the car park on Shepherds Hill Road.

If you prefer to wander alone, self-guided tours and trails are available for download from the Friends of the Botanic Gardens website with audio tours available on iPhone or android from the MyParx website .

There are also a number of places to eat within the park with the Adelaide Botanic Gardens such as the Botanic Gardens Restaurant, Cafe Fibonacci and the Simpson Kiosk offering a variety of food delights to suit everyone.

Adelaide Botanic Gardens is open from 9.00 am on weekends and will close at 5.30 pm each day during May. Please see the website for more information including parking. Entry is free.

State Library

Have you ever wondered just what is behind the scenes in the State Library? Why not take mum on this special tour of all the buildings from the oldest to the newest?

Recently voted one of the world's most beautiful libraries, the Mortlock Wing is included in this special tour along with the modern Spence Wing basement and the 1860 Institute Building. Specialist library staff will take you behind all those closed doors.

This free event can be booked at the Event Brite website with the tour running from 10.15 am to 11.15 am on Mothers Day. Meet your tour guide in the Glass Foyet, Spence Wing, North Terrace, Adelaide.

POP Market Hahndorf

Take mum to the Pop Market in beautiful Hahndorf. This market has been running for some time now and just keeps getting better.

The market is running on Mother's Day and has for purchase lots of handmade treasures for you to spoil mum with. There will be Trixie's Trinkets and Ren's Crystal Prescriptions and all your favourite stalls.

The market is located inside the Hahndorf Institute, 55 Main Street, Hahndorf. Entry is free, but why not bring mum along and let her choose her own handmade gift right here at the market.

Adelaide Zoo

Adelaide Zoo is offering a number of options to spoil mum and the whole family on Mother's Day.
