Middle-Eastern cuisine is rich and diverse. The common spices found in Middle Eastern cuisine include turmeric, cumin, cloves, cinnamon, peppercorns and allspice. Other key ingredients include mint, barley, pistachios, figs, pomegranates, dates and rosewater. Savoury dips such as Tahini, Baba ghanoush and Hummus also play an important role in Middle Eastern cuisine. Common dishes include Kibbeh , which is similar to a croquette, Shawarma , which is similar to a wrap, Falafel is a popular fried snack and Ful medames is regarded as a staple meal. In regards to sweets and desserts, Baklava is popular, as is Turkish delight .



In Melbourne there many Middle Eastern cafes and restaurants. Some of the highlights include the popular A1 Bakery in Brunswick, which was recently reviewed by our own Goneril . A1 Bakery is great for a quick feed, you can sample a range Middle Eastern pizzas, including Za'atar , Sujuk (spiced ground meat), Kishik and Shanklish varieties. Also on the menu is cheese pie and spinach and cheese triangle.

Mankoushe, also located in Brunswick, has a great Middle Eastern inspired menu, which is quite similar to A1 Bakery. You will find a range of pizzas in flavours similar to A1 Bakery, as well as delicious savoury pastries.

Rumi , located in Brunswick, has an equally delightful menu. Freekeh Salad, Rice Pilaf, Shankleesh and Silverbeet Mante, Spiced Lamb Shoulder and Pumpkin Fattoush have all featured on the menu here. The dessert menu includes Persian Fairy Floss, Ma'mool Arabic Shortbread and Almond Milk Pudding.

There is also Abla's Lebanese Kitchen in Carlton, which serves up Lahem Mishwee, Kafta Mishwee and Farrouj Mishwee, alongside Home Made Baklawa, Turkish Delight and Halwa.



Maha Bar and Grill in the CBD has a diverse menu, with both small plate dishes (sahen zghir) and large plate dishes (sahen kbeer). Small plate dishes include Arak Cured King Salmon and Twice Cooked Charred Olive Oil Duck. Large plate dishes include Tunisian Brik Bangalow Pork Belly and Line Caught Goldband Snapper. The desserts and sweets are equally tantalising; Peanut Butter Parfait, Baklava Crumb, Turkish Delight Filled Doughnuts, Olive Oil Baklava Mousse and Rosewater Honey all feature.

GigiBaba, in Collingwood is also a great spot for Middle Eastern style dishes. BBQ Quail, Adana Kebab, Seftali (lamb sausages) and more feature at this establishment. Dessert is somewhat limited to walnut baklava.

One final contender, before we hand this discussion over to you, is Kamel , located in Albert Park. Roasted Moroccan Spatchcock with Sweet Potato, Honey and Fennel Pork Belly and Ras El Hanout Lamb Kofta are all great mains. The dessert menu features great Middle Eastern flavours; Chocolate and Rosewater Mousse, Vanilla and Orange Blossom Custard Warm Chocolate and Cashew Baklava, Turkish Delight Ice Cream and Turkish Fairy Floss.
