Welcome to the Secret List: the ultimate list of fun and unusual things to do with your kids in Perth this month.

May is an interesting month – the kids are back at school and the weather is cooling down.



1. Star Wars Day
4th of May is now known as Star Wars Day and if nothing else it is good fun to walk around telling people 'May the Fourth be with you'.

When: Thursday 4th May

2. Kooza – Cirque de Soleil
Deemed to be 'a return to origins' for this incredible circus, Kooza is in town during May (and April and June) and combines their trademark acrobatics and clowning with dazzling surprised and audacity. Here is a review from a mum who took her young kids to see it a few years ago.

3. Stretch Arts Festival
Over two big days in Mandurah, the Stretch Arts Festival will be delighting crowds with a range of activities and event each day including community art projects, kids workshops, local artists, displays and plenty of opportunities to participate and learn about the arts.

When: Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th May, 10am-4pm
Where: in and around Manjar Square, Mandurah

4. Mt Hawthorn Streets and Laneways Festival
The huge Mt Hawthorn Laneway Festival is back and bigger than ever with markets, entertainment, pop-up bars, cooking displays, live music and more. There will be a Family Fun Zone dedicated just to kids with plenty of rides and attractions.

When: Sunday 7th May, 11am-7pm
Where: various streets in Mt Hawthorn in and around the Meze Shopping Centre (Flinders St)

5. Moondyne Festival
Take the kids and head to Toodyay for the Moondyne Festival, where visitors are welcomed to dress up and take part in the free olden days family activities, watch the re-enactments and see the interactive Colonial Village. There will also be food stalls, arts and craft, vintage cars and bikes, antiques and more.

When: Sunday 7th May, 9am-4pm
Where: Township of Toodyay

6. Mothers' Day Makers Market
This event seems to have it all! It is on Mothers' Day and involves playgrounds, shopping, food and plenty of fun, free things. The Makers Market is an award-winning market and will have a range of fun activities for mum and kids including sand art, mini-manicures, craft workshops, face painters and more, not to mention the awesome pirate playground.

When: Sunday 14th May, 9.30am-3.30pm
Where: Heathcote Reserve, Applecross
Cost: Free

7. Free stuff for Mum on Mothers' Day
Just in case the kids aren't already planning a fabulous day for you, here is a link to some of the great free things happening on Mothers Day this year, including free ferry rides to Rottnest, free entry at the zoo, markets and more.

8. Ashley and Friends Day @ Whiteman Park
For train lovers, head to Whiteman Park for a full day of the little steamer Ashley and his friends. There will be train rides on the steam engines along 6km of track through Whiteman Park bushland, as well as farm animal display, unlimited heritage train and bus rides, entry to Revolutions Transport Museum and lots more.

When: Sunday 21st May, 9.30am-4pm

9. Voyage to the Deep
This multi award-winning and record-breaking exhibition is based on French author Jules Verne's 1870 classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and brings to life the deep-sea adventures of Captain Nemo. There will be a giant replica of the Nautilus submarine which kids can climb on and explore, plus real whale teeth, a real-life harpoon, bubbly pipe organ to play plus strange and disgusting foods to discover.

When: Sat 27 May 2017 – Sun 20 Aug 2017, from 9.30am to 5pm
Where: WA Maritime Museum, Victoria Quay, Fremantle
