Believe it or not Melbourne is full chic bars, up a lane, down in a basement, utilising every little nook and cranny… and the best part is you don't need a secret code or secret knock to get in.

If you are a looking for a quirky cocktail, a unique wine list or a little sanctuary away from the hustle bustle outside, there are many places that you can find right in the middle of the city or in trendy suburbs nearby.

Fall from Grace
47 Collins Street 8644 7110

Feel like a movie star from the good old-fashioned adventure movie. You'll need to pull a book on the shelf at State of Grace and this will lead you to the eccentric bar downstairs. Be warned this is more like a hunter's library with the trophies on the wall. This other world has a velvet loveseat, racks of wine, a catalogue of books and beautiful chandeliers.

Swamp Room
16 Russell Place
9663 7557

Imagine New Orleans… this quaint bar is decorated with overhanging fairy lights to look like moss and vines. To find this bar you need to go to the back of bar Ampere and brave the dark hallway to Gin Palace.

Goldilocks
Level 4, 264 Swanson Street
9654 7878

Find the Noodle House and take the lift to a fairytale forest reminiscent of a fantasy set. As you might expect at Goldilock's , there is three bears wall art. This has a rooftop bar perfect for summer night or a romantic date.

Eau de Vie
Malthouse Lane
0412825441

You'll have to look hard for this one. Once you find the Adina sign take the flight of stairs on the right. Enter (if you dare) through the unmarked door with the large handle. The service and the drinks at Eau de Vie have a good reputation. Ask about the Espresso Zabalone which is an interesting mix of vodka, coffee, making syrup, vanilla and saffron this. Already tempted? Now Imagine this is topped with saffron mousse and snap frozen with liquid nitrogen actual table. Sound like something you would like to do?

The Supper Club
Level 1/161 Spring St Melbourne
9654 6300

There's no signage on the door but it's a distinctive classic door. We had to search hard for it. This is now one of the few cigar bars in Melbourne left standing. When the non-smoking rule was enforced, the cigar bar (The Supper Club) shifted upstairs to the rooftop, creating a new 'smoke free' stylish cocktail ambience for the second level space called Siglo.

Thomas Olive
300 Smith Street Collingwood
94192202

After a bit of meandering, you'll find the door up a steep set of stairs. It's worth the climb if you're into cocktails. They boast a sophisticated space with the unique cocktail list. They are expensive but very special.
