You know how the song goes - The Best Things in Life Are Free, and here in Melbourne, there are so many things you can do and see - for free. That's right - at no cost at all.

Free entry at The National Gallery of Victoria

At WeekendNotes, we have highlighted numerous free activities in Melbourne, for example The Ian Potter Art Gallery, State Library of Victoria, The Royal Arcade, Shrine of Remembrance, The University of Melbourne and Royal Botanic Gardens can all be visited for free. To get around the city for free, you can use the City Circle Tram. Plus, there are always free exhibitions in the Melbourne CDB; Shaun Gladwell: Stereo Sequences at ACMI is running until August 2011, ManStyle - An Exhibition is running until November 2011, As Modern As Tomorrow is running until February 2012 and Screen Worlds at ACMI is a permanent exhibition. The best thing about Screen Worlds is you can make your own Matrix style action scene in the Bullet Time simulator for free, and you get to keep a video of it as well.

Don't forget the free film screenings - Outside-In Cinema at the State Library of Victoria is running until August 2011 and Fed Square hosts free film programs, music performances and cultural events, almost every week.

If you know of a great free Melbourne activity, please let us know by leaving a comment below.

We look forward to your responses.

The Botanical Gardens, either for a jog or walk. Its a great place to wander and learn about all the different botanical species as well as grab a breath of fresh air, have a picnic or have a bite to eat at their cafe or across the at one of the eateries on Domain Road.

There is a fantastic book market at Federation Square in the atrium every Saturday. You can spend hours there perusing the tables. It wont cost a thing (unless you want to purchase a book).

BTW - my dad cut most of the glass for the roof of the NGV
There's still chunks of it lying around his house in it's beautiful colours.
We are about to renovate and I am having a pile of opals gemstones and these chunks of the left over glass thrown into the concrete of our new floor. Then I have a concrete cutter who will cut it back so all the treasures show through and polish it into a lovely floor.
Nice to see the above picture of the roof.
