I love trying new food and new restaurants. My other passions are Origami www.weekendnotes.com/origami-classes-japan-australia-friendship-association/ and Pokémon www.weekendnotes.com/pokemon-center-tokyo/

Birthday treats and presents from family and friends are heart-warming; birthday freebies from restaurants are fun and satisfying because it belies the statement that there's no free lunch. Usually all you have to do is subscribe to the restaurant's newsletter or become a member.

Sign up to become an El Social member of San Churro and you will get free Churros for Two valued at $14.95 on your birthday. They even send you a reminder before your birthday. The churros can be redeemed on your birthday or the day before/after your birthday. We chose to have the churros with milk chocolate and salted caramel. The churros were crisp with fluffy interiors with the milk chocolate having a delectable milky taste and the salted caramel having the right amount of salty flavour.

Join up as a Nando's PERi-Perks member and you could get a complimentary regular meal comprising a burger/pita/wrap from their Signature or Classic Range, a regular side and a regular drink. The catch is you have to remember to do a transaction with your membership card within six months prior to the start of your birthday month. My mother's free birthday meal was a Thighs & Slaw Pita ($11.95), Chips ($3.95) and Sprite ($3.25). The pita had juicy chicken with a delectable smoky flavour from the BBQ sauce and caramelised onions with a bit of extra texture from the coleslaw.

Coopers Alehouse Gepps Cross gives a two-for-one offer for meals costing $25 or under if you subscribe to their newsletter. An email is sent to you about a week before your birthday and the offer is good within 21 days of the date of email. We ordered a Coopers Cross burger and got a Loaded pizza worth $21.90 free. The Coopers Cross had a juicy beef patty with a delightful smoky taste from the various fillings while the Loaded Pizza had a generous amount of various types of meat, olives, baby spinach and cherry tomatoes.

Subscribe to Slug N Lettuce British Pub newsletter and you can get a free dinner up to $25 in value and a free pint on your birthday. The key words are 'on your birthday' as that is the only day you can redeem the offer. My sister had the Crispy Skin Salmon ($24.90) on her birthday. This dish is great for seafood lovers, with the salmon having crisp skin and tender flesh with some chorizo to add a smoky element to the dish. A bit of freshness was also provided by the cherry tomatoes and spinach.

Just to see the transformation of the old Gepps Cross hotel into a Coopers Alehouse would be a miracle
