It's a functional object that most pedestrians hastily step over without a second thought. Yet Brisbane artist
Dennis McCart has applied his artistic vision to manhole covers (or access covers
as some might call them ) in his new
'Beneath my Feet' exhibition at
The Hold Artspace in West End.
To be held from 24-27 June,
'Beneath my Feet' was inspired by McCart's time in Japan. 'The entire country was awash in transmission towers and power poles,' he explains. 'It was then no surprise that I observed another mass-produced structure beneath my feet, the Japanese utility lid.'
McCart noticed that while other countries mass-produced 'banal iron circles by the thousands', the Japanese capitalised on this unique canvas by turning lowly manhole covers into
objets d'art. 'This series of paintings documents utility lids from both Australia and Japan comparing notions of production, commodity and cultural perceptions of beauty and ugliness,' he says,
Can't wait to see them? You can enjoy a sneak peek of McCart's works at his
website . McCart has recently exhibited at Moreton Bay Regional Art Gallery and Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery, and has been a finalist at the Griffith Gas Awards and Moreton Bay Art awards.
