The city of Bendigo is caught up in wedding-dress fever rather than gold fever at present.
An extremely popular exhibition, The White Wedding Dress, currently located at Bendigo Art Gallery showcases 200 years of garments and accessories associated with wedding fashion. Many retail shops in Bendigo have old-style wedding dresses on display in their stores as a tribute to the exhibition.
The White Wedding Dress runs until 6 November and is one of many world-class exhibitions to be secured by the Gallery in recent times. If you saw this exhibition and loved it, then you will not want to miss Gace Kelly: Style Icon, exhibiting at the Gallery from March to June 2012. Details of past and future exhibitions can be found on the Gallery website.
Aside from exhibitions, the Art Gallery is home to permanent collections including 19th Century international and Australian collections, and a contemporary and modern collection. An additional space, the Post Office Gallery, is located at the old Bendigo Post Office in Pall Mall.
An events calendar is available on the website and includes curator and guest-speaker talks, after-hours viewings of exhibitions, educational and art/craft activities for children and adults and special events with music, food and wine.
The Gallery Shop is open the same hours as the Art Gallery and is located just inside the main entrance. The Shop has a wide range of art related products for sale.
Located at the rear of the Bendigo Art Gallery is the Gallery Cafe, with access either through the Art Gallery or via Rosalind Park. The Cafe offers a simple lunch menu including local wines. Coffee and a range of cakes are also available.
The Bendigo Art Gallery is located next door to The Capital, Bendigo's performing arts centre, and directly across the road from the busy and popular View Street precinct. The Gallery is wheelchair accessible.
