Good Ol' American-style Fried Chicken
With such a growing presence of American style food in Sydney, it is not surprising that Belles Hot Chicken is fast becoming one of the most popular eateries in Barangaroo food precinct. This is obviously a niche market to address Australian's craving for unhealthy spicy wicked wings!

Delicious fried chicken wings

To be honest, I have not heard of this place before. When my friend suggested to dine here, I thought it's like another chicken shop. When we arrived, the tables were all packed and I reasoned people who work in Baragnaroo are happy to pay premium for an ordinary chicken meal.

Their menu is really short and simple. You choose your meat from the following selections: Chicken tenders, drumsticks or wings. There are fish and mushroom options as well, but it's clear we should opt for the chicken since this is a chicken specialty shop.

I glanced across the menu and was slightly shocked to see they are charging $17 for some fried chicken wings. Wow, I mean, I could get a real decent Thai or Japanese meal for $17 instead of 3 hot wings snack pack. Colonel Sanders priced his chicken more reasonably at his KFC outlets.

My friend's keen interest of this place was the range of heat level on offer. There are 5 levels of hot/spiciness to choose from. If you are game, you can try the 'Really Hot' level or the next level up.

Wings and 1 side $17

We decided to get the southern chicken wings in medium heat with a broccoli and almond salad as the side. Our order arrived quite promptly in an American-style basket.

The chicken wings were quite large in size and they were coated in a fiery red marinade. I hesitated at first before I took a bite. I must say Belles nailed the fried wings recipe spot-on. The hot wings were crispy on the outside and beautifully moist and tender on the inside. They were delicious and not crazy hot. Just the right spiciness level for my taste.

My friend was slightly disappointed because beyond the coating there was not much flavour with the chicken. I guess she has a higher expectation than just a plain fried chicken with chilli paste.

Broccoli and almond salad

I quite liked the broccoli and almond salad because the creaminess balanced the spiciness of the fried chicken quite nicely. Also, it was a welcome sight to see some green vegetables in midst of a long table filled with fiery red chicken pieces.

They serve alcohol here, so you can chill with friends and have a few expensive chicken snacks after work.

Swing by if you're in the area or if you are craving for some spicy hot wings!
