Believe it or not, the winter solstice is almost upon us. June 22nd marks the shortest day and the longest night of 2019, and is all about looking forward to longer, brighter days and the promise of spring. The Belgrave community will be hosting its 13th annual Lantern Parade on this night and it looks set to be an eye-catching spectacle.

Belgrave Main Street will be closed to traffic as the parade makes its way down the road with dazzling masterpieces. Besides the main event of the parade, you can find fire pits, food stalls, drummers, dancers and other performers at the Parade Village, located at Hayes carpark in Belgrave. A full schedule of events is coming soon, so stay up to date by checking back here to see what is on.

The parade itself consists mainly of large lanterns created by groups in the community. They will be coming together in the weeks and months before the festival and working with Lantern Artists from the local area to produce some amazing lanterns of special significance. You can watch the parade from the sidelines or join in with your own lantern. There is also the opportunity to get involved as a volunteer and help with the running of the event.

If you want to make your own lantern but aren't sure how to go about it, you can join a workshop. These will be held in June with more details coming soon on the Facebook page . The organisers are urging participants to think outside the box this year and go wild with costumes and props to enhance the spectacle of the lanterns themselves. If you run out of time, you can make your way to the Belgrave Kinder right before the event to get some help. Belgrave Kinder will be open between 3pm and 5pm, offering assistance with lantern making (and also hot soup – yum!). The Lantern Parade itself is running from 5pm until 8pm, with the parade beginning at 5.30pm.

It is advisable to catch public transport to Belgrave as Burwood Hwy will be closed and parking will be limited. Entry to the event is free, so if you're looking for a great way to mark the winter solstice, this celebration of community and creativity should be top of your list.
