You Won't Sleep Through This One

My one word to describe this film: Chilling. All the way through the film and even after that post-movie daze has lifted.

When I heard Nicole Kidman's new film was a thriller I knew I'd like it. What I didn't know is that I would be jumping out of my seat, feeling the fear her character displayed on the screen as if it were my own.

Before I Go To Sleep tells the frightening tale of Christine Lucas (Kidman) who after a devastating head injury, suffers from Anterograde Amnesia. This particularly disturbing (and real) form of amnesia causes its victims to forget everything, every day, every time they wake up.

As we learn throughout the film, Christine's character can recall moments of her life leading up to her accident, leaving her husband Ben (Colin Firth) to fill in the blanks each morning. Every day as he gets ready for work, the ever-patient Ben tells his wife when they met, how they met and how they got married 14 years ago. She goes through her memory album as Ben puts on his tie, and begins to comprehend the reality of her situation as he kisses her goodbye.

After Ben leaves for work, a phone rings and we discover Christine is keeping secrets from her husband, secrets not even she knows about... until she answers the call.

The ominous voice on the end of the line is Dr Nash (Mark Strong), who admits this will mean nothing to Christine, until she retrieves a shoebox from her closet. What she finds inside is a camera, used by Christine herself as a visual diary. It contains only one recording: "As I sleep my mind will erase everything I know & am" and this is when the chills start...

Kidman's performance is, I believe, her best yet. They say the mark of a good actor or actress is when you forget it's them you're watching. Both Kidman & Firth fulfil this objective from start to finish.

Before I Go To Sleep is based on S.J Watson's best-selling novel of the same name.
