Summer's warm temperatures have already begun teasing sun-deprived New Yorkers. But the thought of squeezing into last year's bikini after a long, cold winter of comfort food indulgences can be daunting.
Getting a gym membership can be costly, but for the frugalistas fantasizing about the perfect beach body there is an inexpensive alternative to shape up for summer.
In an attempt to help New Yorkers battle the bulge, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation's
BeFitNYC program allows locals to use the fitness facilities at more than 30 recreation centers all around the city for free the first Monday of every month.
Nonmembers are invited to take yoga and aerobics classes and use cardio and weight equipment at select recreation centers to stay healthy and fit. BeFitNYC's website also provides fitness facts and tips for those new to the game or just unsure of how to better incorporate regular exercise into their lives.
Fitness opportunities are available for people of all ages and experience levels.
