Most of us can take a random great snap of a landscape or seascape and often take selfies and photos of friends. To get a great shot does require some knowledge of angles, composition and lighting. This is why doing a photography workshop is a good idea. The most valuable thing about a workshop is that it forces you to focus your energy on just photography, enabling you to learn.

The Body Parade Photographer at the Beach Model Group Photography Workshop will walk you through steps so you can take beach model photography like a pro. By the end of the workshop no doubt you will have more motivation and creative insight for enhancing your personal photography sessions.

The Body Parade is owned and run by photographer Wayne Williams. He is a professional photographer and teacher with over twenty years combined experience. His work history has allowed him to photograph celebrities such as Miranda Kerr, agency models both in Europe and Australia with his work featuring in several publications. He has also hosted three solo exhibitions both in London and Sydney. Now Wayne enjoys running photography workshops and providing photographic services for commercial fashion brands, e-commerce designer labels, as well as photographing portraits and portfolio's for private clients.

I'm one of many people who are obsessed with taking photos but generally I tend to use my iPhone or my Sony a6000 digital camera on auto. When I received the invitation to do the Beach Model Photography Workshop , I was thrilled. This workshop welcomes all levels of skill. For me being a total novice, attending a less informal workshop like this was ideal. I had the opportunity to familiarize myself with the basic workings of my camera, learn tips and socialize with other camera enthusiasts.

Our Workshop day commenced with meeting the group at Manly Wharf. Classes vary in size from 5- 10 people or more. While we were waiting, the models had their hair and makeup touched up. Williamspro Makeup and Hair is owned by international commercial and fashion makeup artist, hair stylist Azzi Williams. In the photo below another model/make-up artist, Sarah Clift , is applying the final touches of makeup to model Karolina Jazwinski

I was excited to be working with professional models who at least not only look stunning but also naturally know how to pose and position their bodies to create the best shots. Depending on the final number of participants in the workshop The Body Parade provides 2-3 professional models for the shoot location.

After the final makeup applications, we headed to our shoot location at Delwood Beach on the harbour foreshore. This beach is just around the point from Manly Cove along the Fairlight area. A lovely location, out of the wind with plenty of contrasting areas to use for our backgrounds.

Delwood Beach is the ideal location, with plenty of good background options - ocean activity, contrasts of sands, shells, water, rocks and greenery.

Wayne commenced running through the basic rules on taking photographs with models. Simple tips like respect, no physical touching of the models, guidelines and limits on pose requests, praising, encouraging, and that showing them your photographs will also help inspire them and enhance the shoot.

Doing a photo technique workshop and taking great photographs is not only about learning the lens configuration settings.
There is so much more to consider, such as composition, light, mood, expression, location and time of day.

Wayne has a wealth of knowledge and is very approachable. He calmly went through tips and options individually. He also checks your photographs throughout the shoot offering the use of reflectors and flashlights to enhance and reduce shadows.

It was really helpful to receive his guidance. We took turns with each of the models using the rock ledges and the ocean as our backdrops. I felt more confident after each shot.

Being a beach lover, I was naturally inclined towards the ocean as my favourite backdrop. I asked our model Karolina if she would pose on the sand and she was happy to oblige.

By the end of the first hour, I was getting into the groove asking Karolina to try a few different poses. It was fun, both our models were very friendly and accommodating of our requests.

As my confidence grew, I even ventured a few closeups. It helped that our models were so young and stunning.

I took so many great photographs of the models that the hardest task in writing this article was choosing which photographs to use. They were true professionals and made the workshop a great experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop and feel this would be ideal for anyone wanting to take the first step in learning some tips before embarking on a more technical course. Ideal to buy as gift certificates for friends or family, it is also a great team activity for corporate events and staff rewards.
