It's mid spring and that means rose season. The Rose Society of South Australia is holding their annual spring rose show once again at Chateau Yaldara Barossa, near Lyndoch in the beautiful Barossa Valley,As a keen a rose enthusiast I have been to this event many times, and I will definitely be there this year. This show is well attended by both club members and rose growers near and far, who roll up for some friendly competition, by entering the over 40 floral art categories. I long to enter myself however I'm afraid the humble roses from my garden don't make the grade. Yet I always attend and study the roses carefully and seek out the prizewinners to see if I agree with the judges, and check out just exactly what is expected. But every year there is always some problem with earwigs or a storm that has wrecked my crop, but one day I will make a contribution. This year it's been so dry most of mine have crinkled edges. But you don't have to be a rose grower or even a gardener to attend. Just a love of seeing something pretty. If you love flowers then you wont be disappointed, as these are Adelaide's best. My favourite categories in the show are the heritage roses and the David Austin's, as these are mainly what I grow, and also I like to view the floral art designs which are highly creative indeed.

There is also a children's section, where children have made a flower design on a saucer or some other sweet little creations. And don't miss out on the Barossa Beauty. This is the biggest and most beautiful bloom, and every year its amazing to see there is another big winner, perhaps even bigger and better than last year. There are good prize winnings for the winners, but it is the thrill of entering that is the real incentive. See the rose society website for details of competition entry.

Entries need to be in during the week, and judging is on Saturday morning before the hungry rose lovers want to look at this years best. The opening is at 1pm on Saturday. It is very busy at this time, so if you like to move around freely to see the exhibits its best to attend a little later. And remember to leave time to wander around outside to view the lovely gardens of the Chateau that have masses of roses.

Altogether there will be over 400 rose and floral displays, with many varieties of spring flowers. In addition to viewing these up close, you can also listen to some guest speakers. Erica Bartsch of Barossa Nursery will talk at 11am on Sunday. Kapunda artist Jacqueline Coates who paints wonderful floral paintings will speak at 2.30pm on Sunday. There will also be information about the rose society and some potted roses for sale. In fact if you like to look at each exhibit as I do, then you may need to make a day of it. Bus groups are welcome but please phone the venue before the day to book. Food and drink will be available outdoors,

To get to the venue from the city, take the Port Wakefield road, then take the turn off to the northern expressway. This will blend into the Sturt Highway. Take the Mallala road turn off and the overpass into Willaston, which is the quickest way into Gawler. Then at the traffic lights in the main street take the Lyndoch road left to the Barossa Balley. The road to Chateau Barossa is before you come to Lyndoch. So if you see a woman wandering about taking notes and looking perplexed as to what is needed to enter a competition, so I can then tick this one off my bucket list, give me a wave and say, "maybe next year"?
