The sun glistens against the perfectly manicured green. Two warriors armed with nothing but a bag, and a beer step onto the battlefield where they prepare for a contest of skill and finesse.
The smells of summer pierce their nostrils as they stare each other down.
Weapons are drawn, and the first combatant steps up to the mat, before getting down on one knee and bowling the jack, setting the mark for the contest to take place.
Yes, it's a perfect day for lawn bowls.
And what better way to spend a pristine summer's day than enjoy the sun, toss down a few beers and hurl insults between some good mates.
It's how I recently spent a weekend behind the beautiful backdrop of Gunnamatta Bay in Sydney's south, at the South Cronulla Bowling Club.
The barefoot bowls at South Cronulla is a great way to enjoy a frivolous afternoon in the glow of a summer dusk, casually sinking down some $3.50 beers.
So next time you're wasting a gorgeous Sydney afternoon by watching the box, get outside and hit up your nearest bowling club, as many turn out to be an undiscovered gem that provides hours of fun on the cheap!
