A parent’s work is never done. As if creating them, feeding them, clothing them, housing them and educating them wasn’t enough, children these days also expect to be constantly stimulated. Let us give thanks, then, to the
Bankstown Steam Locomotive Society, whose rides on its miniature five inch gauge railway have been keeping the little brats amused for years.
About 800 metres of track runs through Ruse Park, ensuring that rides are of sufficient duration to keep the kids entertained, without being so long as to test their focus-challenged Generation Z brains. They will enjoy the variety of locomotives, which include live steam, petrol and battery-powered.
BSLS trains operate on the second Saturday of each month (excluding January), from about 11am to 2pm. Rides cost $2, which this non-profit hobby group then uses to pay for track and ground maintenance. Because enclosed footwear is required, children with thongs, open sandals, bare feet and the like will not be accepted.
The BSLS also offers special sessions for pre-school outings, birthday parties and other such occasions, for which at least eight weeks notice is required. Those interested should visit the
contact page.
