You know how it is. You're in the cinema. The movie for which you had such high expectations is falling short. You feel a twinge or regret – or if it's
that bad, possibly a sledgehammer of disappointment – as you realise that your hard earned cash could've been better spent on a dental check-up or a new pair of spectacles.
But it's too late. You've paid for your ticket. You want to shout at the screen but you know it's not the done thing. You wonder whether to get up and leave halfway through, sighing loudly as you do so, thereby making a statement to your fellow cinema-goers that the movie just isn't worth the celluloid it's printed on. But when you take a look around, you realise you're the only one in the whole place anyway. How could you have got it so wrong?
So best to just sit it out to see if it's one of those movies that's so awful that it's really rather good. Sometimes those dismal films can turn out to be the most entertaining....
Well, now there's a place where you can meet others of like mind and let out all that pent up frustration at having squandered your money, a place where screenings of rubbish films are the order of the day (you'll be disappointed if the movie is actually any good), a place where the hosts actively encourage you to shout out at the awfulness of it all, where you can throw popcorn at the screen and heckle to your heart's content. Bad Film Club.
The Bad Film Club is the brainchild of comedians Nicko and Joe. In a nutshell, their club shows dire movies. During the film, the duo provide a kind of witty DVD commentary, highlighting the bad bits and generally ripping the mick out of it.
The club has been getting quite a name for itself and attract some big-name comedians such as Stewart Lee, Robin Ince, Brendon Burns and Simon Munnery. Their commentary is guaranteed to raise a smile, if not a guffaw.
The Bad Film events take place regularly at the Barbican, as well as in Brighton. Past bad films (all are post-1975 productions) have included Jaws 4, Who Dares Wins, Stripped To Kill, Die Hard 2, Basic Instinct 2, and Top Gun.
These nights are popular and sell out fast, so it's best to book well ahead.
