Were you one of those who thought that Libraries would disappear, along with printed books, with the advent of ebooks?

Not long ago I attended a lecture given by academic, Roly Sussex, about the changes to public libraries all around the world. These changes are more than just a reaction to advances in technology such as the extensive use of DVDs, e-books, and CDs. Professor Sussex detailed at some length how Libraries had indeed become a community focal point for societies in which we nowadays rarely communicate with our next door neighbours.

My own Council Library has always encouraged activities for children throughout school holiday periods, and provided a warm and nurturing environment for all ages.

There are Book Club meetings, people playing Scrabble or Chess, as well as activities deemed as aids for relaxation such as Colouring and Lego. Senior citizens attend Technology Workshops and I understand that that the Photography Workshops are also very popular.

Indeed the variety of activities available at the Libraries in the Redlands is ever changing. Please look here for the calendar of events for:
**
Capalaba Library** at 14 Noeleen Street, Capalaba
Cleveland Library at Bloomfield and Middle Streets, Cleveland
Victoria Point Library at 7-15 Bunker Road, Victoria Point

My favourite events at the local Library are the talks given by Authors about their books. These have included both fiction and non fiction, memoirs, and even historical tomes about the local area.

What's the fascination, you may ask? Not only doing I enjoy learning about the newly released book and the story it tells, but hearing the author share their experience of writing is also fascinating. Sometimes we even learn more about the author than the book.

In coming weeks the Redlands Libraries will be featuring some very interesting authors who will be sharing their latest efforts with us, and all at No Charge.

Monday, 1st August, 2016 at Cleveland Library between 2pm - 3pm.
Mike Carlton will be chatting about his latest book, Flagship the cruiser HMAS Australia 11 and the Pacific War on Japan.

Carlton is a well known media presenter with a history in radio, tv, and newspaper and has long been reporting on foreign affairs. He was a War Correspondent in Vietnam in the '60's and has a life long passion for naval history.

Friday, 19th August, 2016 at Victoria Point Library between 11am -12pm
Katie Rowney will be talking about her debut novel, Front Page News, released only a few months ago.

Rowney, South East Queensland born and bred, is a communications specialists who translates technical jargon into information for the masses. This fiction piece revolves around a Cadet journalist in a country town who normally writes up the lawn bowls results and the price of cattle for the local paper and ends up the prime suspect in a murder case.

Friday, 26th August, 2016 at Victoria Point Library between 12pm - 1pm
International award winning children's author, Michelle Worthington, will be sharing her love of storytelling. A Brisbane lass, Worthington is renowned for encouraging a strong love of reading and writing in young children and conducts regular visits to schools. The youngsters in my family have benefited from a few of her books, including Hootie the Cutie.

The authors will have books available for purchase on the day though this is in no way compulsory. It is also advisable to secure your place at the event by contacting the Library direct. (Cleveland Library 07 3829 8770 / Victoria Point a Library 07 3884 4011)

Winter is a great time to catch up on your reading so go along and catch up with what's happening at your local Library soon. You may well be surprised.
