Poindexters: grab your glasses, dust off your Periodic Tables and assemble your Bunsen burners. From the 26th to the 31st of May, Canberra (and surrounds) will be hosting the annual
Australian Science Festival!
Entering its 17th year, the ASF claims to be “the world’s second largest science festival, after the Edinburgh International Science Festival on which it was modelled.” It will run for almost a week, with events catering to both adults and children scheduled throughout the day. Most will be found in Canberra, in venues as grand as Parliament House, Mt Stromlo Observatory and the National Convention Centre, although some are also being held in the nearby towns of Canowindra, Goulburn, Murrumbateman and Wee Jasper.
This year’s
program is engagingly diverse. It includes historical presentations, panel discussions, sustainability demonstrations, ecological talks, geological walks, astronomical observations, reptile displays and climate change lectures, while also covering disciplines as varied as medicine, archaeology, agriculture, forensics, cosmetics, zoology, music, art- even malt making!
Most of the events are free or cheaply priced, but some will set you back as much as $44. And while practically all are walk-in, bookings are required for a few.
As you count down the days until the festival, why not follow the
ASF on Facebook? Fans of the ASF will receive news updates, event suggestions and informative links, while also being able to interact with the site.
More importantly, don’t leave it to the last minute to organise accommodation, which may prove scarce.
