Are you looking for a challenge? Do you love sports? Do you also like meeting new people? Then, here is a perfect event for you to train for and to join in.
The
, which is a biennial sporting event regarded as one of the premier and largest participation sporting events on the Australian sporting landscape, is being hosted in Geelong this year. It is a week-long event to be held starting
Saturday 5th October to Saturday 12th October, 2013.
Before the event, something about
Geelong : With an ideal location of only an hour from Melbourne, it is set on a sparkling bay with a well developed and welcoming waterfront precinct, and a renowned and award-winning local wine region. Its fascinating past is brought to life in cultural attractions, public art installations and heritage buildings. In addition, Geelong is considered to be the gateway to the world famous Great Ocean Road.
Back to the , about 8800 participants from across Australia (in fact people from around the world are welcome to join) are expected to take part in this fun-filled event. As well as an extensive sporting schedule, the will also comprise a variety of social events throughout the week, providing a festival atmosphere for both competitors and visitors to Geelong.
Some of the objectives of this event are:
• make the wider community aware of the benefits of sport;
• encourage and engage the masters sport demographic in ongoing activity that is beneficial to their long term health and wellbeing;
• encourage a positive active lifestyle in the community that is balanced with social outcome and opportunities;
• reaffirm with all levels of sports administration the importance of mature-aged sports people who are seeking opportunities to participate; and
• demonstrate the myriad of attractions of sport: skill, achievement, competition, social interaction, and satisfaction.
So what are you waiting for?
Entries are now OPEN for the 14th and if you register before Friday 31 May you will become a gold participant and receive a special edition Games lapel pin, distinct participant accreditation pass, and priority access at the Games Village for accreditation collection.
Registration fee varies according to the sport, but there are discount fares for seniors, and there is an extra fee charged for late registration (after mid-August).
If you are unable to participate in the sports, but would still like to be part of this great event, don't fret. With an involvement of about 2000 volunteers, you can use your talent, meet new people and learn new skills as a
volunteer . Volunteers need to register
online or a registration form can be
downloaded . You can also volunteer to become a Community Ambassador, whose main role will be to promote and raise awareness about this event. Read more
here to learn if you have what it takes to be an Ambassador. Applications must be received by 9:00am on Monday 15 April.
By the sounds of it, this sporting event promises to have something for everyone. And for someone like me, it's a perfect opportunity to explore Geelong and meet people. See you all there.
