Coldie, tinnie, amber ale, pot, brew - a beer by any other name would taste as sweet. My apologies to Shakespeare. Whatever you call it and whatever container it comes in, Australians love beer in all its forms. So what better day to bend the elbow sinking a couple of coldies with a few mates than Australia Day? If you're longing for lager and parched for pilsener, then get along to the inaugural on 26 January from 12 pm.

The Fox , one of Brisbane's most recognisable and historic pubs, is setting out to create an Australia Day tradition with this new beer event on the Australian Beer Festival calendar. Normally known for its ornate art deco ambience and popular rooftop garden, this Australia Day the Fox will be taking over the surrounding streets with stalls offering beer, cider (in some places the new beer) and gourmet food for your gastronomic pleasure.

I should tell you that the term boutique beer is out and has been replaced by craft beer, emphasising the craftmanship in the brewing process. Some of the craft brewers exhibiting at the event are Cairns based Blue Sky Brewery , Stone and Wood from Byron Bay, Fremantle's Little Creatures and James Squire , named for Australia's first brewer, thief, First Fleet convict and father of eleven children. Now there's a man to name a brewery after.

Beer Education
The hotel's BBQ and Smokehouse Restaurant will host Meet the Brewer and Beer Education sessions so you can understand how beer is made and learn to appreciate the finer points of beer in all its guises. True beer craftspeople will lead you on a journey of beer discovery. Why should wine snobs have all the fun? Timetables and ticketing for these events will be released soon, so check the website closer to the date.

People's Choice Awards
Not only can you spend the afternoon tasting some of Australia's finest craft beers, you also get to vote for your favourites. Voting forms will be provided at the festival and categories include Best Lager, Best Dark, Best Ale, Best Pilsener, Best Specialty (includes ciders) and Best Overall Beer. Sounds like the best fun.

Entertainment
The Fox Hotel is an official Triple J Hottest 100 venue. The countdown will be heard throughout the hotel and in the street. DJs will be mixing it up after dark.

Tickets
Attendance at the Festival is free, but it will cost you $15 to get right into the swing of things - $5 for a tasting cup and $10 for a tasting booklet complete with ten sampling tickets.

If brewers and bar staff seem like better Australia Day companions than cockroaches then this is the event for you or perhaps if you don't mind the creepy crawlies you could divide your time between two quintessentially Australian events and head on down the road to Kangaroo Point for a few Cockroach Races @ the Story Bridge Hotel as well.
