Ashton & Old opened its doors back in 2012, unbelievably I only discovered it recently through a friend.

Once I arrived, I realised that I must have driven past this place at least a dozen times and not noticed it. It's easily done, I am a professional car singer, I sing so loud when I am driving that I sound exactly like any artist on the radio. Yes, I am totally trying to blame my mad vocal cords and intense interpretation of lyrics for failing to notice this café sooner.

I have been back twice since just to make sure the exceptional service and great food quality wasn't a first time fluke.

Firstly, I want to mention that this café is air-conditioned. I'm flagging it to you all just in case you don't remember that a few days ago we had that cataclysmic event where the entire population of Brisbane melted like ice sculptures on the sun. Air conditioning =TICK!

The décor is a very much 'I am home' feel except you don't have to do the cooking or cleaning. There are pot plants with succulents for sale on the tables so if you enjoy Ashton & Old, you could order a coffee for the road and pick up the pot plant to recreate the experience at home. Framed pictures on the walls tell the story of the surrounding area in classic black and white. It's tastefully relaxed (I sound like a real-estate agent…) what I mean to say is that its a cute café.

The coffee was good, they serve Veneziano any which way you like it. They also have a selection of freshly squeezed juices, smoothies and teas. I should mention that everything comes with a free genuine smile. The staff at Ashton and Old seem to actually like their jobs. (Insert applause)

The breakfast menu is different; yes, there is the usual bacon and eggs on toast (as below) available, but you can also build your own breakfast.

They offer a few things you wont find in just any café like Duck sausage with creamed mushrooms, lentils and poached eggs, greens and wholegrain toast. You might also like the Pork Belly Fried rice pictured below. YUM!

Or the French Toast if you crave a little sweetness in the morning.

I enjoyed the Breakfast Bruschetta with all my favourite things including poached eggs for an extra $3. Also, it was nice not to have to use a chain saw to cut the ciabatta.

They do a delish Breaky Burger consisting of steak, bacon, fried egg, tomato relish and greens. This one in particular will keep the men happy and you will be able to tell they are enjoying it because they will ignore you, grunt and nod their heads after every bite.

What's a breakfast menu without pancakes! Ashton & Old serve buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup and ice cream. If you are really hungry, for a few gold coins and you can add bacon, eggs or banana.

This morning I noticed they had a full house and although it was slightly noisy, I had no trouble hearing or talking over it all. I should mention that it's not always busy, I feel it depends which day you go and what time you arrive. Regardless of the volume of people, the staff remain friendly and the meals don't take long to arrive.

If I had to find one thing I didn't like and I am going to mention it although it's common practice but it's a pet peeve of mine. Lattes are served in a glass with no handle although I asked for it in a mug. I should have specified with a handle, but I feel that a mug implies handle, not just a bigger glass. Most places do this so most of the time I burn my fingers. I know what you are thinking, switch to a flat white....but I love my lattes!

Overall, I like Ashton & Old - it's a great little place to catch up with friends or family. If you go to their website, you will find that they do catering and offer the space and services as a venue for functions.

One last bonus - They have this little cute sign outside! Go on let's do a collective 'AWW!'
