Located 10 kilometres from NSW's Yamba, is a small surfing town with a hidden past time. The blue pools of Angourie were a result of a rock quarry that went wrong. An underwater freshwater spring was disturbed and turned the hole in the ground into an aquatic haven. A short drive from Yamba, it offers a safe and exciting swim with stunning views of Spooky Beach (known as 'Spookies' to the locals) which is a known spot that shapes up dyed-in-the-wool surfers. Whether you're in the pool for a dip or walking on the rocky shore marvelling at starfish, anemones, sea squirts and sea snails; the pools are an all round adventure for a day trip.
One should not forget that the pools offer a daredevil edge, mentioned above, you may be curious as to what this entails. The angourie pools are very deep and have two rock walls that many young and old jump off. These cliffs are extremely steep, the most open one at the beginning off the walk to the pools is around 6 metres in height. Whereas the more adventurous second wall, you are able to jump off from a height between an alarming 10-15 metres in height. If jumping off these walls, be sure to be safe and cautious. The freshwater ecosystem is an Australian sweet-spot for travellers in Queensland and New South Wales. So if you're undecided about what your hot days, Australia day or weekend will entail, head to Angourie.
