Performance Poet, Andrea Louise Thomas visits the Mornington Library and their Cafe each week. Andrea is a special species, who entertains with voice and word and meter.

Some think a library is for books and it is. It is also a great place to learn about all types of communication, including Performance Poetry.

Mornington Library provides a 6 month residency for a local poet each year. This begun in 2009. This year the Cafe Poet is Andrea Lousie Thomas, a lively, funny, vibrant poet who adds a dimensional reality to poetry that will create a lasting effect on your senses.

Rainsong is a small poem by Andrea that is soft and delightful in its tone.

Rainsong

Rain is nature's love song
wooing us with its gentle rhythm
Picking up speed
Reaching a fevered crescendo
Then halting abruptly
Its afterglow a rainbow

Andrea Louise Thomas (c) 2008.

This is only a slight sample of her work and part of the skill in her work is the performance or presentation of the written word. Andreas poetry is complimented by her smooth tones and gentle rendition of her crafted poetry.

Poetry was part of life at school. From kindergarten and earlier, we learn rhythms and poems and songs and limericks. When we leave school, it seems that this is a dimension of our world that gets lost in the contemporary nightlife which seems to form much of our modern social interaction.

A poetry slam or competition is an interesting way to spend an evening and Andreas presence at Mornington Library may well introduce a few literary souls to this form of art. Creating an interest in something wholesome, yet vibrant and fluid like life.

This might inspire you to write, create, perform or attend an evening of delightfully delicate dedicated diatribe, dialogue or discourse. That is you might like to go to a poetry slam or competition and see what its all about.

It's great when a library goes beyond the usual book-lending call of duty and decides to put on extra events. It encourages the community to get involved and as with something like Mornington Library's initiative, it might encourage some people to pick up a pen and experiment with poetry of their own. May more libraries around the world follow their fine example.
