Seeking more inspirational success stories into melanoma research

Everyone is invited to join the Australian Melanoma Research Foundation (AMRF) in helping raise desperately needed funding to help research into melanoma continue, by supporting the special screening of Mel Gibson's latest movie, Hacksaw Ridge on Sunday, at 3.30 pm, on 6 November, 2016 at Wallis Cinema, Mitcham.

All proceeds from ticket sales from this event will go directly into research.

AMRF has chosen Hacksaw Ridge, because it is an incredible movie based on the inspirational true story of Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who during the bloodiest battle of Okinawa, during World War ll, singularly saved 75 men without firing a gun.

In Adelaide we have six inspirational stories of our own, where six melanoma sufferers, who should by normal counts be dead, but they are still alive, due to an amazing experimental vaccine made from the melanomas of donor patients. The six melanoma sufferers were expecting to die within six months, but have all managed to live an average of 15 years longer. Unfortunately, not every sufferer has had the same miraculous result. In the 2000-2008 trial, 49 people out of the 54 people participating, are dead, including two who were declared cancer free, but died of non-melanoma causes. Sadly, despite the six positive results, the program is struggling to continue due to the lack of funding. To read more about - Beating the Odds Celebratory Dinner FROM INCURABLE TO INCREDIBLE! Due to the high number of months that Australians are exposed to the sun, Melanoma is often referred to as "Australia's cancer", with more than 1,200 people dying from the disease every year, but due to research in Adelaide, sufferers have a greater likelihood of survival.

Hacksaw Ridge is the story of Desmond T. Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist and conscientious objector, who refused to bear arms. He was the only American soldier to fight on the front lines without a weapon, because he believed killing was wrong, even if the war was justified. As an army medic, he evacuated, single-handedly, American wounded from behind the enemy lines. Desmond T. Doss was awarded the Medal of Honour by President Harry S. Truman.

Filmed in New South Wales in 2015, Hacksaw Ridge received an ecstatic 10-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. Hacksaw Ridge has been given preview screenings across the United States, where it will open in November, which is a strong indication it is a contender for the Oscars.

Mel Gibson is no stranger to Oscar nominations. In 1995, at the 68th Academy Awards, Braveheart, was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won five: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Best Sound Editing.

Hacksaw Ridge is Gibson's new Christian movie since The Passion of Christ in 2004. It is his first film after directing Apocalypto in 2006, when in the same year his anti-Semitic outburst directed at a Police Officer was the beginning of several scandals that resulted in his public humiliation and alienation from Hollywood. However, numerous positive responses at the Venice Film Festival have been reported. The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney, hailed the movie as a "forceful comeback...a violent drama about pacifism that succeeds in combining horror with grace...Gibson is a muscular storyteller who knows exactly how to raise a pulse, heighten emotion and build intensity to explosive peaks."

**Hacksaw Ridge also stars, Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, Ryan Corr, Teresa Palmer and Richard Pyros.

This is an ideal time for the general public to help make a difference so more inspirational and successful stories into melanoma research can continue.
