The 'American Donuts', found at Queen Victoria Market, are lovely, doughy, balls covered in sugar. They are so yummy, as they are different and hot and fluffy. They are nothing like what we as school kids had to grab at a tuck shop - those stale, sugary treats covered in icing.

The long van with 'American Donuts' written across the doors is a joy to behold. If the look of it doesn't give you joy, the smell of fresh doughnuts will! Everyone who passes near the QVM on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays will rush to purchase one of these "American" doughnuts before they sell out.

So I find it strange that Krispy Kremes oversized, overglazed, overly priced balls of sugary sweetness can also be called 'American Donuts. 'Krispy Kremes came into the city several years ago and everyone stood in line for hours to take home this inferior product - that was supposed to be next best thing since sliced bread,.

Well, now give me white bread please, as I don't want to really indulge in this bad imitation without having a paramedic stand by. Please try the original and best - at American Donuts at QVM.

You can eat only one if you want, but you will want that second one!

Ah the aroma, ah the taste.

There are little cousins around like at the Footscray Train Station, but QVM doughnuts are the penultimate indulgent with the simplest ingredients.
