Altona Sports Club

Published September 24th 2011

As the name suggests, the Altona Sports Club has a sports focus with such activities as lawn bowls and pool, as well as cricket for those who love to have a hit. Since the club is situated right next to Altona's shoreline, patrons can go angling for fish if the weather isn't too cold or the stink of seaweed doesn't bother you too much (it can be very strong in this area).

There's also something for people who couldn't care less about winning what they might consider to be a silly little game. All the different pokie machines give patrons the chance to win some dough, while the PlayStation 2 games available give the kids a chance to play game machines more appropriate (and just plain more interesting) for them. There is also a playground for those kids who would rather play in actual reality than virtual reality.

Like most similar venues, there is a bistro with both indoor and outdoor seating. It has a basic pub menu, serving the likes of steak and veg, steak sandwiches, chicken parmas, soups and so on. But unlike a lot of these venues, the Altona Sports Club's meals are pretty good, and the bistro is perfectly situated at the back of the venue, allowing diners to look at the beautiful ocean view while eating lunch or dinner. The friendly chef often comes out of the kitchen to see if the patrons enjoyed their meal, showing the people cooking your meals actually care about what customers think of their food and service rather than just thinking about their pay cheques.

The bar is located in the function room and has a good variety of beers, wines and spirits. The function room can be booked for anything from corporate functions, birthday parties, and wedding receptions. It has a decent sized dance floor for those who like to have a boogie, and the club has karaoke on Friday nights and live cover bands on Saturday nights.

So if you happen to live near Altona or just want to go to a laid back place and get a decent feed, then the Altona Sports Club is definitely worth a look (just don't be put off by the gross seaweed smell!)
