A good friend of mine is doing great things. In 2009, he started a community development organisation by the name of
KNM .
It supports young women in education, training and microenterprise in Arusha, Tanzania.
On the 26th May, KNM will be holding a stall as part of
Africa Day Festival to be held at
African House in East Brisbane, 38 Lytton Rd, East Brisbane.
This stall will be selling hand-made jewellery, bags, skirts and other handicrafts. It's a great opportunity to celebrate a unique cultural event and buy handmade, quality work where your money will be going to a good cause.
The work organisations like KNM do around the world is of great benefit to individuals with big dreams who need a little more support to reach them. Elizabeth, a story of hope, is a young woman who began learning sewing skills through KNM. She then completed her Certificate in Early Childhood Education and now works full time as a school teacher.
It is sure to be an event full of cultural delights - such as African art, music, dance and food, along with drumming workshops. I've been to the Queensland Multicultural Festival in the past and remember a day full of dancing to Punjabi Bhangra, Latin American Salsa and breaking out my newly-found African grooves and somehow still finding time to feast on delicious food.
If the Africa Day Festival will be anything like that, it is an event that I highly recommend. On top of that, there are many good causes to support such as the good work that KNM does in Tanzania and this event truly shows that a festival can reach further than Brisbane.
