According to Wikipedia it was a century ago in 1916 that the first 'Supermarket' was born, before that it was still very much the norm to go to what we would now call a 'farmers' market' to pick up your groceries. In current time the growing popularity of the social ethos' of support local, sustainable & traceability, has brought Farmers Markets very much back into vogue.

For the past decade, the Wayville Farmers Market has given new meaning to the term supermarket! Every Sunday (except during the Royal Show) you can find everything you'd need to fill your fridges and pantries, and it's all local.

The indoor and outdoor space is filled with local growers and producers of fruit & veg, meat stalls, olive oil, jams & preserves, artisan chocolate, fresh pasta, free-range eggs, fresh bread, vegetarian meals, brunch, patisseries, milk, cheese, yogurt and more; Below is a just small preview.

There are so many fantastic fruit and veg stalls set up every Sunday- one of my personal favourites is Patlin Gardens. I grew-up on fresh fruit and veg from my Grandparents' garden, so when I first bought fruit and veg from the supermarket I had a real shock at the difference in taste; the produce from Patlin Gardens is like that of my Grandparents' much loved home veggie garden, full of flavour and obviously grown with soul.

Local Bakers and Patisseries are also set up selling freshly baked artisan goods. Two of the big names include Boulagerie 113 and Abbotts & Kinney.

Boulagerie 113's stall is setup indoors and they have a permanent location just up the road in the Goodwood Rd shopping strip.

Abbots & Kinney are one of my favourite Patisseries around town; If I could recommend anything I would say try everything. After a long stretch of markets and pop-up spots, mid 2015 saw Abbots & Kinney open their permanent bricks and mortar store at 78 Pirie St, in the CBD. An incredible gastronomic adventure awaits you here my friends.

One of the two local milk brands I love are B-D. Farm Paris Creek. B-D Farm Paris Creek milk is first grade natural milk produced on farms under biodynamic farming methods. They avoid the use of homogenisation, GM and hormones & they don't use UHT treatment; The same milk is used to create their handcrafted dairy products. B-D. Farm Paris Creek milk tastes like what real milk should taste like, their dairy is also free from artificial ingredients. All this goodness is coming from our very own Adelaide Hills and is available at their outdoor stall every Sunday at the Wayville Farmers' Markets.

There are some quality meat stalls set up indoors - some specialising in certain proteins, others have amazing Mettwursts - have a wander and see what you find.

Vegetarians (& non-vegetarians) you have to try 'Let Them Eat' (also indoors). This is quality, clean vegetarian food with pack a punch flavour - no 'rabbit food' to be seen here. Flat bread pizzas, ratatouille stuffed spinach crepes, leek & gruyere tarts and flavourful veggie packed salads, just to name a few. Another stall to have earned themselves a permanent location after years of markets - you can find Let Them Eat in shop 26 D Central Market Arcade.

The indoor Pavilion also has a stage for cooking demonstrations, which in the past has included celebrity cameos by guests from MKR and MasterChef.

If your hungry after all that shopping or if you need some sustenance to start, then be sure to pop around the side of the pavilion to the breakfast and brunch stalls.

If your lucky you might find a MasterChef celeb in the form of Season One runner up, Poh Ling Yeow, at Jam Face by Poh! Jam Face started at this very Farmers Market and now also has a permanent second home at Stall 28/29 Adelaide Central Markets. Serving up Master Chef worthy deliciousness under that fancy Marquee.

Jam Face is described as fun dining rather than fine dining.

This is also where you are going to find the afore mentioned Abbots & Kinney plus many others like Kuhl' Kooking

So once you've done your shopping, filled your bellies and treated yourself to a pastry, why not pick up some fresh cut flowers to make the day complete.

There's no wonder Australian Traveller Magazine awarded them the best Farmers' Market in Australia- What a win for SA.

There are so many more Farmers, Makers, Groovers and Shakers waiting to be discovered at the Wayville Markets, the above mentioned are just some of my favourites.

The stalls are all food based, there is no brick-a-brack or knick-knack stalls cluttering up the space. All this is to the tune of acoustic buskers singing some well loved classics.

There is Parking on the grounds and heaps of street Parking on Leader St and near by side streets (I usually find one by driving around).

There is also the W90 bus which stops right out the front of the market entrance. Alternatively the Wayville train Station is also near the entrance you can get there by taking the Belair train.

If you would like to know more about the stall holders or the maket it self you can check out the Markets website here or follow them on Facebook here they are also on Instagram
