About Time - Best Free Events in The Suburbs

After trawling through About Time History Festival's long listing of events for May, I found some gems happening in Adelaide's suburbs.
These include some events requiring a gold coin donation (so are virtually free).
While the CBD has exciting things happening during the festival, the suburbs have some quite unusual activities. You can even keep fit (or have a quiet drink) as you enjoy them.
Read on for more!
Eastern suburbs
Take a walk on the wild side - on the free
Eastwood walk you'll hear tales of past residents, see nineteenth century housing and parts of the old Glenside Hospital (but not
Z Ward ). May 7 and 14, bookings required.
Save your legs on the free
Towers Turrets and Spires bus tour of nineteenth century architecture in Norwood on May 22 (bookings required).
For a closer look at the history of Glenside Hospital, take the
Glenside Hospital: First 50 Years tour on May 21 or 25, bookings essential.
Northern suburbs
If you were tempted by the
Port Pub Trail , then there are two others at Port Adelaide you may like. The
Arresting Tales tour on May 13 explores the 1860 police station, and the
Port Vintage tour will showcase a variety of heritage buildings around the Port on May 12, 19 or 26.
Southern suburbs
I had never even heard of the Technohistory Museum in the south of Adelaide before, but gadgets interest me a lot. Students have created displays of technology and innovation through history that will be
open to the public on May 21 and 25. Definitely one for my calendar. (Free, no bookings needed).
In Mitcham the owner of the old Temperance Hotel has carefully nurtured the near derelict building back to life.
Take a free tour of the conservation works, and see how the building looks now. Bookings required.
Another free walking tour of heritage buildings is in Unley on May 15 and 19, starting from the
Unley Museum . Hear stories about the chemist, baker and postmaster. Bookings required.
Western suburbs
Anyone wanting to keep fit while getting their history fix is in for a real treat in the west. The
On Ya Bike events for
Brompton and
Grange are both free and look like great fun. Just pick up a loan bike and map from the library and off you go about Adelaide. It's best to call first and check bike availability to save waiting.
While you're at the Henley Beach library check out their
Corner Shop photo display.
Also down at Grange the 115 year old Institute is
holding an open day on May 26.
If reading about historic
Cummins House tempted you, then take advantage of its
Open Days on May 4-5. There's lots to see and it's well worth the gold coin.
Another new museum to me is the
Sir Thomas Playford ETSA Museum , open every Tuesday in May. It's all about electricity and power generation, and the million volt spark demonstration has got to be a highlight.
I saved the best one for last for any dipsomaniacs - a free
historic hotel bus tour to six pubs in Mile End, Thebarton, and Torrensville. Sadly free drinks are NOT provided, and bookings are required.
Adelaide Hills
Adelaide Hills dwellers have not been forgotten by About Time - an Oakbank Heritage walk brochure which you can pick up from local businesses or
download from here . You could even do it as part of a day trip on the
Onkaparinga Scenic Drive .
Visit
Mike Sheehan's Museum in Mount Barker on Sunday May 12 to see vintage cars, cameras and other fascinating things.
Get a new perspective on the
Mylor Bootmakers Cottage which brought the local community together, with a
talk by Dr Anne Herraman on May 19.
Rail fans will be particularly interested in a talk about the history of the
Balhannah to Mount Pleasant spur line on May 9 (bookings required).
During the talk you will be able to see rare footage of the last train to use the line in 1963.
Country areas
Unfortunately space doesn't allow me to cover the events in country towns from the Barossa to Yorke Peninsular, but the range of activities is just as good. Check out the
About Time website or pick up a program from your local library for more information.
Enjoy your trip down memory lane !
