We Australians are a sporting bunch, and it's no surprise considering the wide open spaces and warm weather we're blessed with. Adelaide especially, is a place of great variety and quality when it comes to finding a space to break a sweat and keep fit.

The Snake Pit – Largs North

Located on Lady Gowrie Drive, right next to the Fort Largs Police Academy, the Snake Pit takes the form of a series of twisted paths and steep, sandy inclines, earning its reputation as one of Adelaide's more testing training grounds. Despite complaints that barriers and more defined trails have "yuppified" the pit, it's soft, white sands still provide a more natural alternative to the standard concrete paths.

The Seacliff Ramp/Stairs

Winding their way up a nasty incline, the Seacliff ramp will put a deep burn into the legs of even the fittest of athletes. It's only a relatively short distance to the top, so it's the perfect spot to do a number of repetitions. Likewise, the Seacliff stairs are found just 100 metres up the road, behind the Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club. Best of all, the beach is right there for when you want to cool off after a few climbs.

Along the Torrens

A touch of scenery will always add to any running experience, and the Torrens has a post-card shot around each bend as it winds on past the CBD. The track accompanies the river from the foothills in the East, all the way down to West Beach, so the possibilities are endless as to which stretch you choose to explore. Be wary however, that this is also a bike track, so be sure not to get in the way of cyclists.

The Uni-Loop – North Adelaide

On any given afternoon, the Uni-Loop on MacKinnon Parade, North Adelaide, will be the chosen venue of a variety of sporting clubs, track athletes and fitness groups, and with good reason. The loop is a 2.2 kilometre circuit, which runs around various sporting fields in the lush parklands. With distance markers every 200 metres, it's easy to keep track of exactly what distance you run, making it the perfect location for a time trial.

The Mount Lofty Climb

If it's a more brutal and arduous challenge that you crave, making the climb to the top of Mount Lofty will surely satisfy your desire for self-inflicted exhaustion. Starting from Waterfall Gully, the trail makes its way through the scrub, up to the very top of Mount Lofty, where if the ascent wasn't enough to leave you breathless, the view surely will. Take a moment to gaze over Adelaide in all its entirety, before making a descent that will seem like child's play after going up.
