One of Newtown's newest cafes,
A Coffee and a Yarn distinguishes itself from the rest by combining good coffee with the click clack of knitting needles. The concept café caters for experienced, casual and juvenile knitters alike.
They have a colourful range of organic and fair trade yarns, as well as inspiring patterns to seduce the nifty-knitters out there. Or do you get 'cast-off' and 'castaway' confused? (Hint: one's the process of binding your stitches together and the other is an
overrated Tom Hanks film). Then why not pick up one of the needle and wool sets that are scattered about the joint and stitch a few lines? It's much less commitment than a scarf, and your hard work goes towards a good cause: each of the squares knitted by customers is donated to
Wrapped With Love, an organization that makes blankets for our less fortunate peers around the world. Who thought indulging a caffeine twitch could be such a socially enriching experience?
The café is also starting after school knitting classes for youngsters. The classes run on Wednesdays from 4-5pm. Alternatively, if your child is already a precocious knitter, why not pick them up a very cute DIY beanie kit?
The coffee is great (it's
Coffee Alchemy, for the caffeine connoisseurs out there) and there are also a good range of sweets and pastries from nearby
Black Star Bakery (which is also worth a visit while you're in the neighbourhood) and cakes from
Manna From Heaven. I can vouch for the lamb shank pies, or if you're just after a nibble then the Ginger Ninjas are your (gingerbread) men.
