Part of the Festival of 'The Glory of Vienna', an all Schubert concert was held at the Queen Alexandra Home at Coorparoo on Monday night.

Schubert was heard to say 'I gave 98%, most people only give 2%'.

He was born in 1797 and by the time he was 18, with very little musical training, he had written 20,000 bars of music. During his short life he attracted many admirers and friends. One Joseph von Spaur supplied the improvised musician with manuscript paper in his early years. He wrote over 1,500 works in his short career and today is one of the most favoured composers. As one friend noted, he worked all day, finishing one piece and straight away starting another.

The programme opened with the only 2 string trios written by the teenager in 1816. This was his first attempt at chamber music, both loved today and frequently performed. They reflect his deep admiration for the masters before him. A Mozart theme is clearly recognisable in the B flat major trio D471.

Judit Molnar, soprano, sang 4 of Schubert's lieder songs with mucho gusto, opening her programme with the well-recognised and loved 'Ave Maria'.

By far the star of the show was the Trout Quintet. It was written with 5 instead of the usual 4 movements. We were taken on a playful journey by Ensemble 1. It was formed in Vienna in the 70's and after a successfully touring the world they moved to Australia, working in T.V., radio and many festivals and concerts.

Spiros Rantos is the violinist and conductor of this distinguished group of musicians who enjoyed playing with the trout as much as the audience did watching them. The trout teased, wiggled, and took little rests then darted off again defying the fisherman to catch him. The musicians reflected every light and bright moment, while the bass and cello gives the piece depth and the possibility of capture. No, this is a smart little trout, and Schubert never forgets the child within, although his life was short and rarely without pain and poverty.

The festival continues until May 31st in various locations throughout Brisbane. You can get in touch with 4MBS classic FM or ring 38471717 to book and pay on line, no booking fee.
