Even in southern states it would have been possible to see some of the Draconid meteors rising up from the north horizon. You wouldn't be able to see the origin point or even most of the meteors.
However meteors can come from a range of different sources so it could simply have been another meteor.
However most shooting stars move very quickly, which is why they burn so brightly. Most are not even as large as a grain of sand. There are just dust particles burning up in the sky.
Without resorting to the aliens hypothesis, there are a number of things it could be, including
- a piece of space junk burning up in the atmosphere
- Flare, maybe launched from a military base
- and of course, those pesky aliens
