If you've ever wondered what the Scots wear under their kilts, head to the Castle Hill Showgrounds on Sunday 1st November, 2009 for the
140th Annual Highland Gathering.
Organised by the Combined Scottish Societies of New South Wales, the Annual Highland Gathering guarantees a fun day out for everyone, Celt or not!
Marvel at the lads and lassies in the 2009 NSW State Dancing Championships and enjoy the Celtic sounds of the NSW Pipe Bands in the band championships.
The big guys will be giving it their all in the Trans Tasman Heavy Events Challenge, as they undertake feats of strength such as
throwing the hammer and
tossing the caber. Watch these unbelievably strong men attempt to lift round smooth spherical stones, known as Bundanoon Stones, ranging from 90 to 150 kg.
There'll be Scottish stalls, childrens races, haggis hurling (now this, you've got to see), food and drink aplenty and vintage cars.
Haggis has long been known as the traditional Scottish dish, and apparently it's pretty good, as long as you don't ponder too much over the ingredients!
The grand finale of the day will see the Massed Pipe Bands, with over 200 pipers, marching to their own grand sounds.
The Castle Hill Showground is at the corner of Showground Road and Carrington Road. Entry is via Doran Drive (off Carrington Road) and the event will be signposted on the day. Parking is free.
So, slip on your best kilt and join in with the jigs and the reels!
